Mac Printer Driver Installation (LANIER)

Introduction

Mac drivers for LANIER machines, are version and model specific, as such while this document is designed to be as widely compatible as possible there may be some variations.

You will need to know the model number for your machine, as well as the model numbers for any installed accessories, for Mac computers these accessories must be specified for their features to be available.

How To Install A Mac Driver – Verify The OS Version

Before you can install a LANIER driver, you’ll need to first verify the version of your Mac OS (Operating System), this can be done quite simply, by clicking the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen (as shown below) and selecting “About This Mac”.  This will be required information for downloading the software.

The next step will determine if this Mac is compatible with your machine or not (some older ones may not be).  You can sometimes update an older Mac to a compatible version, but this is not always an option.

NOTE: You may be able to update an older Mac to a supported version, however it may require taking it to an Apple Store, as the updates needed are not all available online depending on your current version.

How To Install A Mac Driver – Downloading The Driver

Search for “LANIER” (or “RICOH”, they are the same brand), followed by your MODEL number mention above.  For more precise results, include the word “driver” at the end.

If you performed your search on Google, then with few exceptions the first result should generally be the one you want.  It should link to a page on support.ricoh.com, and will generally include additional model names, as these downloads are usually driver libraries for multiple machines.

The driver page will attempt to detect your OS version and show you the compatible driver, but in some cases (particularly with versions newer than 10.14), it will not do so.

If you scroll down to the lower portion of the page, you’ll find a list where you can manually select your OS version.

NOTE: Despite being listed, versions below 10.12 will generally not have a driver, those list a PANTONE file in place of the driver which will not work for setup.  You may be able to update the Mac to a supported version but this is at Apple’s discretion.

You’ll want to download the PPD installer for your respective OS version.

Opening the PPD will give you a PKG file with an orange/yellow icon, open that and it will begin the installer.

Follow the prompts on the screen.  You will be prompted for the password for the computer during installation.

The installer will prompt you if you want to keep the installer file or send it to the trash when closed, you can feel free to delete it as it is no longer needed.

How To Install A Mac Driver – Setup The Printer

To install your printer, you will need to go to the Apple icon in the upper left, and this time click on “System Preferences”.  At this point, if you did not already obtain the IP address of your device, you will need to do so.  There are a few ways of doing this depending on model, however you can generally find it periodically blinking in the lower left, or upper right of the MFP control panel.

Now on your Mac, under your “System Preferences”, choose “Printers and Scanners”.

To add a new printer, click the “+” sign in the lower left.  An “Add” window will open, based on the network you are connected to you should see a variety of printers/devices that you have available.

If the printer is listed here, you can technically select it here and change the driver software under the “Use” drop-down.  However, this uses the Bonjour protocol which is not recommended.

For a reliable setup, you want to choose the “IP” option at the top.

On this screen we need to set several options to get it working, as we are setting the printer up manually.

  • Address – Enter the IP Address of your MFP
  • Protocol – Set it to Line Printer Daemon if it is available, if not Internet Printing Protocol
  • Queue – You can leave this blank
  • Name – By default this field will copy what you type in the IP field, but you can name it whatever you want, I recommend the MODEL of your Printer, as mentioned at the start of this document.
  • Location – You can leave this blank, or you can enter in something to help identify the printer if you have more than one of the same models.
  • Use – Often this field will change automatically to either something matching the printer model (it will do this if Apple thinks it knows the driver to use), or to a generic postscript driver. You don’t want to use either option, as Apple doesn’t choose the correct driver, and generic postscript will not allow you to use user codes or extended features like the finisher. Choose “Select Software…” which will open a new window.

When you click “Select Software…” a new window will open.  In this Printer Software menu, use the search in the upper right corner to filter the results.  When searching you will likely see results for both a LANIER and RICOH version of your machine. For best results always choose the RICOH driver.

Click “Add”.

Generally, this process will finish without prompting you to configure anything else.  If it does prompt you, click the “Configure” button.  We’ll cover what to do there in a moment, if it doesn’t then we need to do the following to get there.

How To Install A Mac Driver – Optional Features

Select the new printer you’ve installed, and you should have a button on the right for “Options and Supplies”.  Click that.

Under the Options tab, you’ll find a variety of features. You can enable any of these, however they will only work if you have the associated accessory installed.  If a feature is greyed out, then confirm the other features you have enabled, as features that conflict with each other or require another feature to be turned on first, will not be accessible.

If you have an LCT, or other tray features, you’ll want to enable that as shown above, and you’ll need to set the FINISHER to match the model number for your device.  Sometimes you can find the Finisher model number on a sticker inside the door of the finisher, usually towards the bottom of the door or doorframe.

NOTE: If you find someone cannot use finishing settings, such as stapling, check this screen and ensure the model is selected as shown above.

Provided you are not restricting printing with user codes, you should now be able to print.  If your device is locked with codes, we suggest checking our support center for information on User Codes and how to use them.
